Iran calls UN resolution against Syria ‘gift to terrorists’

TEHRAN - Iranian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Gholam-Hossein Dehqani said on Friday that the resolution issued by the UN General Assembly against Syria is a “gift to the terrorists and extremists”.

He added that issuance of the resolution is aimed at undermining the anti-terrorism campaign.

He said that the resolution damages the UN prestige.

The resolution was adopted by the 193-nation General Assembly’s Third Committee on Thursday. There were 115 votes in favor, 15 against and 51 abstentions.

The resolution, introduced by Saudi Arabia, condemns and calls for an immediate end to all attacks against what it describes as the Syrian moderate opposition. It claims that such attacks benefit Daesh and other terrorist groups, including al-Nusra Front, Press TV reported.

“Presence of our country’s military forces in Syria, which is simply for providing consultation, is based on the Syrian government’s request, so issuing such text means violation of the international law and the governments’ right to establish peace,” Dehqani said.

Dehqani said that the resolution and claims made in it are “taking revenge” from the forces that have been fighting terrorism and extremism.
